Lemon City

Lemon City was a pioneer community on Biscayne Bay in the late 1800s and early 1900s. It was never a true city with a government and boundaries, but it did have a post office, school, etc. The settlement was located near three rivers: Little River, Arch Creek and Snake Creek. There were white settlers in the region probably in the late 1700s, but permanent settlement didn't really start until the 1850s and it didn't take off until the 1870s. Lemon City was populated by several "Conchs", primarily people of English descent from the Bahamas that lived in the Keys, Lemon City and Miami. The name "Lemon City" was used by 1889 and for a brief time also was known as Motto. Lemon City became part of Miami in 1925, and today the region is known as Little Haiti. Ingraham and party visited Lemon City and met several settlers including William Freeman, Ned Pent, and John Saunders.
