Portrait of Guy Metcalf - Jupiter, Florida; source: State Archives of Florida, Florida MemoryIn 1887 Metcalf started one of the first newspapers in southeast Florida, The Indian River News, in Melbourne. He relocated to Juno, the seat of Dade County, in 1891 and changed the paper's name to The Topical Sun. He served as editor and publisher. In 1895 Metcalf moved The Topical Sun to West Palm Beach, which was booming with development with the arrival of Henry Flagler's Florida East Coast Railroad. In addition to the newspaper, Metcalf also worked in real estate and road construction, and after his move to West Palm Beach he served as postmaster and superintendent of county schools. On March 14, 1892, Ingraham met with Metcalf in Juno on the party's trip northward. On April 21, Metcalf published a letter from Julia Tuttle describing the arrival of the Expedition party in Miami and what it would mean for the development of South Florida. He also appended his own comments at the end of Tuttle's letter briefly describing his own conversation with Ingraham and stating, ""Mr. Ingraham was very reticent as to the object of their expedition."
