Camp No. 17: Island No. 1

Island No. 1 was covered with buzzards. At this camp, the Expedition party decided to halt the survey. Later, Newman would have to return from Miami to complete the survey from Island No. 1. Note that the island numbers assigned by the Expedition members indicated the day of the month. Thus, the island on which they established camp on April 1 was numbered Island No. 1.

Geographic Location: Approximately 4 miles from Camp No. 16.

Camp Established: April 1, Friday
