Lake Okeechobee is Florida's largest freshwater lake, which is in the south central part of the peninsula to the east of Fort Myers and west of Jupiter and West Palm Beach. The lake and its tributaries are a major source of water for the Everglades. In the 1890s and early 1900s, Hamilton Disston and the Everglades Drainage District completed several canals in order to control the flow of water and drain the Everglades for agricultural purposes. The Expedition party did not visit the lake, but there were multiple references to it in the accounts of the trip.
