Palmetto Thatch

Seminole homestead, Pine Island, with palmetto thatched chickees; source: State Archives of Florida, Florida MemoryDuring their journey, the Expedition party saw multiple Seminole structures that had been thatched with palmetto leaves, including a lean-to and chickees at Seminole homesteads. A chickee, which is a word that Seminoles use for "house," typically is constructed with a cypress log frame and a palmetto thatch roof. Palmetto thatching is the layering of palm leaves on roofs or walls.
