Plumes

The hunting of birds for their feathers, or plumes, primarily for use in fashion, was a big business in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The populations of birds such as egrets, cranes, herons and flamingoes were decimated before the state and federal governments enacted laws and established preserves.
