On the way, they made a short stop at Rockledge, Florida, and noted that the Indian River Hotel had closed a few days earlier. Incorporated in 1887, Rockledge is the oldest city in Brevard County. For much of the 19th Century it was named "Rock Ledge." It was a citrus-growing region, but it's primary industry in the late 1800s and early 1900s was tourism. Hotels like the Indian River Hotel accommodated tourists traveling to South Florida via the Indian River.
