Sanford, Florida

Sanford is located on the St. Johns River, about 20 miles northeast of Orlando, and was a commercial center in Central Florida. The city was established by Henry Shelton Sanford in 1870, incorporated in 1877, and quickly became the leading citrus growing region for the state. When Sanford became connected with Tampa and Jacksonville via the South Florida Railroad and the Jacksonville, Tampa and Key West Railway the region became the largest shipper of oranges in the world. Sydney O. Chase and his business, Chase and Company, were both headquartered in Sanford. James E. Ingraham and the other employees of the South Florida Railroad also were residents of Sanford or nearby communities. The population in Sanford was 2,016 according to the 1890 Census.
