John Saunders

Ingraham and party hired Ned Pent and John Saunders to sail them on the schooner, Margaret, around the Biscayne Bay and northward to Lake Worth. In the texts, they refer to both men as captains. Saunders and Pent were longtime friends. The man frequently named "Sanders" in the Expedition texts, is most likely John Saunders who also was known as Jailer Saunders. He first settled in the Miami area in 1870s, probably in 1876. He was one of the first settlers to homestead on the land that became Lemon City, and it is possible that Lemon City was named because of the lemon grove planted by Saunders. He worked in starch manufacturing, as a sailor, and he was a farmer.

Note about confidence of this information:

There are several sources that spell John's name as "Sanders" instead of Saunders. Also, some sources note that actually there were two men named John Saunders living in the Miami region during this time. Because of this, it is difficult to determine which John Saunders or Sanders the Expedition encountered.
