Seminole Camps or Villages

Seminole homestead, Pine Island, with palmetto thatched chickees; source: State Archives of Florida, Florida MemoryMembers of the Expedition party saw and/or visited several camps, homesteads or villages on their journey. After leaving Fort Myers they saw several abandoned camps, and they found a camp where they encountered Old Nancy near Fort Shackleford (possibly the camp of Little Billy). In their trek across the Everglades, they found signs of many past camps on islands. They also saw the homestead of Billy Harney near the Miami River, and the homestead of John Jumper on the New River. Some of these sites had palmetto thatched structures such as chickees.
