Squaws

Widely considered to be an ethnic slur, the term "squaw" was frequently used at the time to describe Native American women. In census and similar records, Native American men were typically listed by name but their wives and daughters were listed as squaws. In the Expedition texts, this is the term used when describing the Seminole woman, Old Nancy.
