Steamboat Tarpon - Saint Andrews, Florida; source: State Archives of Florida, Florida MemoryThe Expedition party traveled south from Port Tampa to Fort Myers on the the Steamer "Tarpon." The twin-screwed steamship was built in 1887. She was named "Naugatuck" and then renamed when she was purchased by Henry Plant in 1889 and made part of his Plant System of railway and steamship lines. The "Tarpon" was based in Port Tampa and regularly traveled between Fort Myers and Port Tampa carrying freight and passengers. The 160-foot steamer's southbound route in early 1892 was to depart Port Tampa at 10:00pm, on the following day to stop in St. James City and Punta Rassa around noon and to reach Fort Myers in the late afternoon/early evening. In 1902, the "Tarpon" was sold to the Pensacola, St. Andrews and Gulf Steamship Company.
