From there, they took a special train to Sanford to complete their journey. Titusville was connected by rail with cities to the north via the Jacksonville, Tampa and Key West Railroad at first and later by the Florida East Coast Railroad, which reached the city in 1892. The town that became Titusville was originally named Sand Point by settlers in the 1850s and 1860s. In 1873 the town was renamed after community leader Henry T. Titus. The city was incorporated in 1887. The population was 746 according to the 1890 Census.
