Wood's Hammock

Alva F. Woods acquired land on Little River in 1843 under the Armed Occupation Act of 1842. The purpose of this act was to deter Native American hostilities by providing land to armed white settlers. This land became known as Wood's Hammock and was later part of Lemon City, which was incorporated into Miami in 1925. Today the Wood's Hammock land is known as El Portal. Ingraham and party visited Wood's Hammock and the texts include descriptions of the land.
