Cocoanut Grove House

Cocoanut Grove House, circa 1891; source: Albertype CompanyWhen the Expedition party was sailing into the Lake Worth Inlet, the schooner "Margaret" had difficulty because of strong winds and rain. They attempted to sail to the "Cocoanut Grove Hotel" or the Cocoanut Grove House at Palm Beach, about five miles south, but instead sailed to H.P. Dye's Hotel Lake Worth. The Cocoanut Grove House in Palm Beach was the first hotel on Lake Worth. One of the early founders of Palm Beach, Elisha Newton "Cap" Dimick, built the structure in 1876 as a private residence. He later expanded and converted it into a hotel, which opened in 1880. Two years later Dimick sold the hotel to Commodore Charles J. Clark who operated it for years. In 1893, Henry Flagler leased the entire hotel for his employees during the construction of his Royal Poinciana Hotel. The Cocoanut Grove House was destroyed by fire in October 1893. It's original location is designated with a historical marker in Palm Beach at the northwest corner of Pendleton Lane and Lake Trail.
