Braga Brothers Collection.
Photographs, 1891-1960,
bulk 1905-1960.
7 boxes, 4 folio cases,
and 18 oversized prints.
Series 22 consists primarily
of black and white photographs separated from series in the Braga Brothers
Collection. Most were pulled from series in Record Group IV and Series
10 in Record Group II. There are no images from the nineteenth century
materials in Record Group I. The series also includes two photographic
studies of cane growth, one done at Manati and the other at Francisco,
and aerial maps of the properties of the Manati Sugar Company and the Francisco
Sugar Company. The latter were created in 1952 when both companies
initiated cattle operations. The maps indicate cane fields, rail
lines, pastures, mill and port facilities, and property occupied by squatters.
The map of the Francisco properties includes mosaic enlargements.
Of special note are
photographs of a cellulose factory at the Central Tuinucu in the 1920s,
of the Cespedes Sugar Company circa 1950, and the Central Santa Amalia
in the 1930s. Images of people, locomotives, and machinery at several mills
are also evident. Scrapbooks depicting reconstruction of the Regla
piers in Havana, reforestation projects at several plantations, kenaf production,
and freight handling at Guayabal are also included.
In 1992, additional
photographs were donated by the Braga Family. These are contained in Box
6 and include photographs of people and buildings at the Central Tuinucu
in 1905. Also included were many images of Bernardo Braga and his
son, George Braga, photographs taken at Rio Vista, more photographs of
Manati, Tuinucu, and Francisco, and family photographs taken at Varadero
in the late 1940s.
