Series 70 contains circulars,
bulletins, reports and other published documents, from government and non-government
sources, pertaining to the Cuban sugar industry. Many of the documents
are copies of government decrees and laws. The series also includes
data on sugar production, quota assignments, and rainfall. The documents
were published by several agencies. The earliest documents are from
the Cuban laws in English series published by the H.L. Lewis Company.
Copies of the Gaceta oficial were also routinely sent to New York
. Another important source of documents was the Asociación
Nacional de Hacendados de Cuba (ANHC). ANHC documents include the
circulars sent to members of the association and miscellaneous reports.
The latter includes ANHC resolutions, minutes, and decisions (laudos).
Two government agencies, the Instituto Cubano de Estabilización
del Azúcar (ICEA) and the Corporación Exportadora Nacional
de Azúcar (CENA), provided the remainder of the series.
Most of the documents
in this series were sent to Czarnikow-Rionda from the Havana office of
the Cuban Trading Company and were often accompanied by memoranda and newspaper
clippings. The newspaper clippings and the Gacetas have been separated
from other documents for preservation purposes and are stored in boxes
identified in the contents list. Documents were also sent to the
New York corporate office of the Francisco Sugar Company. These form
a separate file in the series.
The first seven boxes
contain documents from various sources arranged by year. A subject
file of unknown provenance covering the years 1939-1960 follows and then
the documents from the Francisco Sugar Company. The series concludes
with ICEA documents on the cane molasses industry for the crops of 1941,
1942, 1945, 1946, and 1950. Other ICEA molasses documents can be
found in Series 41.
