Czarnikow-Rionda Company. Sugar Trading
Dept.
Records, 1948-1959;
1963-1967.
4.8 linear ft. (12
boxes).
This series consists
of three alpha/subject files from several vice presidents of the Czarnikow-Rionda
Company's Sugar Trading Department. Each subject file composes a
single subseries.
Subseries 71a consists
of files of Charles Mott and his successor, Joseph L. Fraites. There
is lengthy correspondence between Czarnikow-Rionda and the Cuban Trading
Company on matters related to shipping, market conditions, and potential
areas for new business. Correspon-dence with C. Czarnikow, Ltd. deals
primarily with the European sugar market for Cuban raws and the British
market. Reports from S.H. Livaudais & Sons describe labor, industry,
and market conditions in Louisiana. Also of interest are the records
related to the post-war expansion of the sugar trade with Japan.
Files related to the company's trade with clients in Chile and Peru are
also present.
Included in Subseries
71a are files related to sugar production at the company's house estates
(Manati Sugar Company, Tuinucu Sugar Company, Francisco Sugar Company,
and the Cespedes Sugar Company.) Unique to 71a are several 1959 reports
from the manager of the Cespedes Sugar Company related to government supervision
of the central's labor force and other activities of the revolutionary
government.
Subseries 71a covers
the years 1948-1959, but correspondence for 1958 is missing.
Subseries 71b was originally
organized into subject files for the years 1955, 1956, 1957, and 1959.
(Again, files for 1958 are missing.) However, many of the folders
marked 1955 contained correspondence from previous years. Presumably,
the file was created in 1955 at the time Joseph Fraites succeeded Charles
Mott as head of the department. The files have been rearranged as
a single alpha/subject file covering the years 1948-1959. The subject
matter of 71a and 71b are similar.
The files in Subseries
71c were created after the expropriation of Czarnikow-Rionda's Cuban properties
in 1961 and provide a sketchy overview of the company's attempts to find
alternative markets and suppliers. Several vice presidents and assistant
vice presidents--most notably, Arturo Sterling, Dwight Massey, and Harvey
Schwartz--created the files in the years 1963-1967. Of special note
are letters related to the collapse of Czarnikow-Rionda's principal rival,
Galban, Lobo, & Company, and Czarnikow-Rionda's eventual acquisition
of Lobo's affiliate, Olavarria & Company.
Much of the subject
matter documented in Series 71 is also covered in the records of Vice President
Reed Clark, 1948-1958, in Series 61.
Addendum: Several files related to ICEA quotas for the company's house estates were added to subseries 71b.
