Biographical/Historical Note

John Ormsbee Simonds worked for over fifty years as a landscape architect and planner. Beginning in 1940 when he founded his first partnership, Simonds and Simonds, his firms were responsible for planning over 500 projects, including more than 80 planned communities and new towns. In 1970, he was a co-founder of The Environmental Planning and Design Partnership (EPD), with offices in Pittsburgh, Miami Lakes, and Michigan. Primarily national in scope, EPD focused on urban renewal, parks and recreation, and broad-scale regional planning, particularly the development of new communities.

His philosophy of planning was firmly rooted in the Buddhist and Taoist traditions of Asia, to which he traveled frequently throughout his life. These travels taught him the importance of designing experiences, rather than places or things, and the need to promote harmonious relationships between humans and the environment. These concepts were proven in projects such as Mellon Square in Pittsburgh, the Chicago Botanic Garden, and the new towns of Miami Lakes and Pelican Bay in Florida.

Not only by his practice of the profession, but also by his role as educator and author, Simonds was able to significantly affect the field of landscape architecture. Through his teachings and writings, he helped to change the perception of landscape architects from that of plant and garden specialists to environmentalists, urban designers, and regional planners. In 1961 Simonds authored the premier major textbook used in landscape architecture and planning education during the latter half of the 20th Century, Landscape Architecture: The Shaping of Man's Natural Environment. This publication was revised twice under the title Landscape Architecture: A Manual of Site Planning and Design (1983 and 1998), and Simonds was working on a fourth edition at the time of his death in 2005.

Throughout his career, Simonds was an environmentalist who preached the need for planned development in order to ensure the preservation of our natural resources. His working philosophy was: "The great opportunity for true (dynamic) conservation lies in promoting (not blocking) the process of comprehensive land planning whereby the most sensitive, most productive, and most scenic areas are defined and presented in perpetuity."

Scope and Content

The Simonds Collection is comprised of plans and drawings, project files, correspondence, writings, speeches and lectures, photographs, audiovisual recordings, memorabilia and other material dating from 1912 to 2005. The collection provides an example of the contribution by landscape architects to the land and resource planning in Florida, Pennsylvania, and other regions; a trace of the 20th century transition and development of the profession of landscape architecture in America as exemplified by the professional work, teaching, and writings of one practitioner and the colleagues of his firm; and gives insight into the workings of the institutions, professional groups, and public agencies with which Simonds was associated.

The bulk of the collection consists of project files documenting his design and planning projects completed in numerous states and regions in North America. The majority of the projects represent locations in Pennsylvania, particularly in and around Pittsburgh, and South Florida. Also included are approximately 2500 drawings and renderings for many of the projects undertaken by Simonds and his partnerships, including EPD: Environmental Planning and Design.

The professional and personal correspondence documents his activities as a landscape architect, educator, and author; his relationship with partners, clients, and professional colleagues; and his influence on development and planning in Florida. His professional service activities are well represented in files related to the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) and various state, national, and international task forces and committees. All of his major publications, including multiple editions of Landscape Architecture, as well as numerous other writings are included in both manuscript and published format. Photographs and slides document his professional career, his personal life, and his travels around the world.

Arrangement

The collection is organized into several archival series: Professional Projects, Correspondence, Speeches, American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), Committee and Task Force Service, Writings, Partnerships, Photographs, Travel Files, Audiovisual Recordings, Memorabilia, Drawings and Renderings, and Biographical Information and Miscellaneous Material. Some of these series, such as Professional Projects and Writings, are further subdivided into more specific categories (e.g., Professional Projects - Florida). Within each series, files primarily are arranged alphabetically. The Speeches - Chronological and the Drawings and Renderings series are exceptions to this arrangement.

Contents List

Professional Projects 1941-1991

This series consists of project files spanning almost the entire length of Simonds' career. A majority of the projects were undertaken in Pennsylvania, and a large percentage of these were completed in and around Pittsburgh where all of the Simonds partnerships were based. Some of Simonds' more significant projects are represented, including the Chicago Botanic Garden, Equitable Plaza and Mellon Square in Pittsburgh, the Virginia Outdoor Recreation Study, the Pittsburgh Aviary, Interstate 66 in Virginia, and the Army Outdoor Recreation Facilities Manual. Note that the Florida project files have been separated from this series and placed in the "Professional Projects - Florida" series.
The project files typically contain correspondence, meeting minutes, research and background material, notes, invoices, and other documents generated during the design and execution of the projects. Files are arranged alphabetically. For a number of the files within this group the original project numbers, as assigned by the Simonds partnerships, are included in the folder titles. For a list of these project numbers, refer to the "Biographical Information and Miscellaneous Material" series. Note that photographs, drawings and renderings originally found in these files have been transferred to "Drawings and Renderings" series for purposes of preservation and access.

Professional Projects - Personal Consultation 1976-1997

This series consists of project files primarily dating from the mid-1980s when Simonds retired from the EPD firm and continued to work as a consultant. Simonds served as consultant on several other projects throughout his career, many of which are included in the Professional Projects series, but this group of files were identified by him as consultation work completed after retirement and are separated for this reason. The most notable consultation project in this series, comprising the bulk of the files in the series, is the Paris Pike Bluegrass project in Lexington, Kentucky.
The consultation project files typically contain correspondence, meeting minutes, research and background material, notes, invoices, and other documents generated during the design and execution of the projects. Files are arranged alphabetically. Note that photographs, drawings, and renderings originally found in these files have been transferred to other series in the collection for purposes of preservation and access.

Professional Projects - Florida 1959-1995

This series consists of project files for the planning projects undertaken by Simonds in Florida. Over a period of 25-30 years, beginning in the late 1950s, Simonds and/or the EPD firm were planners of record for approximately twenty major Florida communities, including Miami Lakes, Fisher Island, Weston, Gateway, West Lake, and Pelican Bay. Simonds considered South Florida with its booming development to be the perfect region for he and the firm to implement their ideas of broad-scale comprehensive land use planning. The partnership established a second office in Miami Lakes, the first of many Florida new towns planned by Simonds and his partners.
The project files typically contain correspondence, meeting minutes, research and background material, notes, invoices, and other documents generated during the design and execution of the Florida projects. Files are arranged alphabetically, primarily listing the county first, followed by the project and/or city name. For several files within this group the original project numbers, as assigned by the Simonds partnerships, are included in the folder titles. For a list of these project numbers, refer to the "Biographical Information and Miscellaneous Material" series. Note that photographs, drawings, and renderings originally found in these files have been transferred to other series in the collection for purposes of preservation and access.

Of particular interest are files containing correspondence with colleagues such as Harold Wagner and Garrett Eckbo, as well as Florida Governor and Senator Bob Graham, with whom Simonds discussed managed growth and environmentally-sound planning in Florida. The majority of the files are arranged alphabetically according to the name of the correspondent or the subject. Within this alphabetical arrangement, the personal and miscellaneous correspondence files are arranged chronologically. Note that correspondence exists throughout the collection in other series, particularly in the Professional Projects files, but the files in this series were identified by Simonds as correspondence and filed separately from other materials.

Speeches - Chronological 1954-1991

This series consists of speeches presented by Simonds over a period of almost 50 years. Several of the speeches were given at conferences or meetings, including ASLA and IFLA, and at universities and colleges. In addition, several addresses were related to the projects undertaken by Simonds and his partnerships, including the Chicago Botanic Garden, Miami Lakes and Saga Bay in Florida, and I-66 in Virginia. Of particular interest is a 1995 speech entitled, "A 50-Year Retrospective: Scope of the Profession - Typical Projects of Simonds and Simonds; Collins, Simonds and Simonds; EPD; and J.O. Simonds."
Files are arranged chronologically. Note that Simonds maintained two groups of speech files during his life: the chronological speeches in this series and the educational lectures found in the "Lectures and Speeches Used in Teaching" series.

Writings - Landscape Architecture 1954-1997

This series consists of manuscripts, galley proofs, correspondence, drawings, notes, and other materials pertaining to the first three editions of Landscape Architecture. First published in 1961, with revised editions in 1983 and 1998, it has been one of the primary texts used in landscape architecture education for several decades. Simonds was working on a fourth edition at the time of his death in 2005. Taken as a whole, the files give insight into Simonds' creative process, providing evidence of his selection of photographs, his use of quotations and "nuggets", the original illustrations and drawings he created for the publications, and his revisions to the text itself.
Files are arranged alphabetically for each edition of the publication. Note that the published monographs for this title, including foreign translations, can be found in the "Writings - Reports and Publications" series, and oversize materials can be found in the "Drawings, Renderings, and Miscellaneous Flat Storage" series.

Writings - Freeway in the City 1965-1968

Simonds served on the Federal Highway Administration's Board of Urban Advisors from 1966 to 1968. As editor of the final report, he was responsible for bringing together the findings and recommendations of seven other planning and design consultants on the board. Published during the height of U.S. Interstate highway construction, Freeway in the City examined the relationships between the freeway, the environment, and the urban region. The files in this series contain drafts, correspondence, critical comments, and meeting minutes. Note that the published monograph for this title can be found in the "Writings - Reports and Publications" series.

Writings - Garden Cities 21 1983-1994

Simonds wrote Garden Cities 21: Creating a Livable Urban Environment as a successor to Sir Ebenezer Howard's influential Garden Cities of Tomorrow (1898). Many of Howard's proposals were subsequently adopted by planners and designers in the U.S. and worldwide, but Simonds felt that true "garden cities" wouldn't begin to appear until the 21st Century, and he intended this book to serve as manual for their development. The files in this series include manuscripts, correspondence, original illustrations, and photograph selection materials. Files are arranged alphabetically. Note that the published monograph for this title can be found in the "Writings - Reports and Publications" series.

Writings - Miscellaneous 1935-2003

This series consists of articles, books, memoirs, and other writings created by Simonds over a period of almost 70 years. Of particular interest to researchers investigating the Asian influence on Simonds and his work are Borneo Remembered (or Down Borneo Way), which recounts Simonds' experiences in Borneo in the 1930s, and Lessons, a memoir of his travel experiences in Asia and other regions of the world. Other interesting materials include an unfinished manuscript entitled "Community," a proposed environmental primer for children, and several writings on topics such as livable cities, Miami Lakes, urban sprawl, the Everglades, and Japan. Files are arranged alphabetically. Note that the bound versions of some of these writings can be found in the "Writings - Reports and Publications" series.

Photographs - Slides 1961-1998

This series consists of photographic slides, primarily of travel around the world and notable landscape architecture designs, including projects completed by Simonds. These slides provide evidence of Simonds' belief that travel was vital to the success of a landscape architect. He implemented a "Travel in Research" plan for his firm in which partners and staff were given annual travel time and instructed to take photographs and present their findings to the rest of the staff upon their return. A large number of the slides in this group are "Travel in Research" slides taken around the world. Other subjects include Florida projects such as Pelican Bay and Miami Lakes, and early work of Simonds and Simonds. Of particular interest are several slides documenting a 50-Year Retrospective of Simonds and Simonds and EPD, presented at the 1995 ASLA Annual Meeting.
