Scope and Content
The collection primarily is comprised of correspondence written in 1943-1944 by B.L. "Bunny" Pemstein, a young Jewish Navy recruit stationed at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Key West during World War II. The letters are addressed to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. L.P. Pemstein, in Worcester, Massachusetts. The letters provide valuable information about life at a South Florida Naval station during the war. Pemstein discusses his training and work as a hospital corpsman, his off duty activities, baseball, his dating of Waves and other women, and the war itself. Some of the letters include enclosures such as photographs and news clippings, as well as copies of "The Scalpel," the newsletter for the Naval Hospital.

The Naval Historical Collection of the Naval War College in Rhode Island holds a set of Bernard L. Pemstein Papers comprised of correspondence sent from the Training Station in Newport and from the Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, VA, in 1943.
