Seminole Wars Historic Foundation, Inc.

Established 1992

The purpose of the Seminole Wars Historic Foundation, Inc. is to preserve significant sites involved in the Seminole Wars, to establish educational programs about their importance in our heritage, and to publish pertinent material relating to the wars.
Most of the important battlegrounds, forts and other significant sites of the Seminole Wars have been lost. It is important that the remaining artifacts and history of this conflict be found and preserved in order that we may come to understand the struggle between the young United States trying to expand, and the Seminole Indians who were determined to preserve their nation and their Florida homelands.
The Foundation has secured two major historical sites: Camp Izard and Fort Dade, both on the Withlacoochee River in Florida. Camp Izard was a major battleground of the Second Seminole War, now formally designated the Camp Izard Battlefield Preserve. The Capitulation of 1837 was signed at Ft. Dade supposedly ending the Second Seminole War. The Foundation also provided critical support in the acquisition of Ft. King in Ocala.
Preservation of these sites and others related to the Seminole Wars as well as conservation of green space will benefit our nation for generations to come. Students of all ages may visit these historic places on field trips where history will come alive as they discuss the "issues of the day" concerning the U.S. Government and the Seminole Indians during the period between 1817 and 1858.
This not-for-profit Foundation is operated for charitable, educational, and civic purposes as well as preservation of natural habitats. Join us in remembering the past, that we may understand the present. For a list of our books and pamphlets please see Publications.

"The Seminole Wars were vital events in the history of Florida. The Foundation finds, preserves and studies the sites and documents of these wars. It is a profound satisfaction to me to be part of this endeavor." - Frank Laumer

"Being a Director has given me a front seat to the preservation work of Florida Seminole War forts. I have met great people who care about Florida and its history, particularly the Seminole War years. This work is important and the benefit of its success will impact future generations of all Americans." - Billy Cypress (Former Director)

"We study history for two reasons: To learn from past mistakes and to be inspired by the courage of those who have gone before us. The Seminole Wars provide us with abundant examples of each. The Seminole Wars Historic Foundation is the best means available to bring these lessons to the attention of a wider audience." - John Missall

"History is more than dates and places. By studying the underlying causes of the Seminole Wars I have gained a greater understanding of the forces that drive American history. By probing into the decisions of the participants I have come closer to understanding the human condition. Being a Director of the Foundation allows me to connect with people who share this same passion and want to share it with others." -Mary Lou Missall

"My interest in being a SWHF Board Member is to be associated with people inspired with the same curiosity and love of subject that I have. I grew up in Florida and read about Osceola and the war against the Seminoles while in elementary school. I spent a lot of time in the Florida forests hunting, fishing, and hiking. Being involved with the SWHF is merely an extension of my youth - Curiosity about my own back yard and the events that took place there. I hope to contribute to the preservation, publishing, and presentation goals of the SWHF and inspire curiosity in others about our land and history." - Henry Sheldon

"Being on this Board gives me the opportunity to work with good and intelligent people toward goals I consider very worthwhile." - Dale Laumer

"The Foundation serves a worthy cause and I am very proud to be a part of it. This work benefits the citizens of Florida and all those with an interest in American history." - Brent Weisman
