LIT 6857 Caribbean Literature & the Haunting of History

Selections from the Rare Book Collection

The following list was compiled as an aid to the above classes on the foundations of Caribbean literature. It is not comprehensive and is only intended as a guide to the primary resource materials in the Rare Book Collection. It will give researchers a sense of the historical background of the region as it was seen by contemporaries. In using these materials, it will also accustom the participants in the handling and use of older materials.

The list is basically arranged alphabetically by place, with larger regions preceding smaller, as British West Indies coming before Martinique. Preceding the geographic listing are the explorers Columbus and Raleigh, and then a topical designation Voyages and Discoveries. Following the geographic listing are topical headings Slavery in the United States, Narratives, Biographies, Autobiographies, and African American Women's Fiction. The placement of titles under any heading can be somewhat arbitrary and the headings are not to be regarded as either inclusive or exclusive. It is advisable to use your browser's Find function to search for particular keywords that may appear under different headings. The subject headings in the cataloging records are included as they will reveal a greater topical focus than the list headings. For instance, Sugar will be found in British West Indies, Barbados, and Jamaica. Another subject heading to search is Carib, which will locate the Carib Indians and the Black Carib Indians. An English translation of Fernando Colón's work on his father's travels appears in the Awnsham's collection of voyages under the topic Voyages and Discoveries. There are also a number of fictionalized and dramatized accounts under the topics to give the researchers an idea as to how others have translated history into literature. The best solution is to read through the list in its entirety.
