Citation/Reference Laor,
The map depicts the "wanderings of Abraham the Patriarch and his life".
It shows the Land of Canaan including names and borders of ancient tribal lands.
The Dead Sea does not appear on the map as the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha have not yet been destroyed and are located on the map.
The map was drawn to resemble a colorful and richly-decorated Flemish wall tapestry.
It is surrounded by 22 medallions depicting scenes from Abraham's life.
Latin words at the top and bottom of the "tapestry" quote from the twelfth chapter of Genesis.
With the elaborate cartouche, medallions, and scroll work it is one of the most beautiful maps drawn by Ortelius, and it is one of the most often reporduced maps of the Holy Land.
From the Holy Land Map Collection donated by Dr. James and Adina Simmons in memory of their parents.
