METADATA

 METS FILES

All resources which will be loaded into UFDC must conform to both the national Metadata Encoding and Transmission Standard (METS), as well as our local extension schemas. METS files include data about each file in a bibliographic resource, as well as descriptive and administrative information about the resource. The bibliographic information can be encoded in either Metadata Object Description Schema (MODS) or Dublin Core. Processing information, and some bibliographic data, is encoded in a locally-defined schema. In addition to the main UFDC extension schema, other project and resource specific extension schemas may be created.

During the normal workflow at the Digital Library Center, METS files are created by the Quality Control Application, and then reviewed by our text technicians. Much of the bibliographic data for these METS files are imported from the catalogue record, when one exists. Stand-alone tools will also be available shortly to code UFDC-compliant METS files.

The METS file for any item loaded in UFDC can be viewed by selecting METS Metadata under the Technical Data menu on the navigation bar to the left of an item being viewed.

 METADATA TOOLKIT

A stand-alone metadata toolkit is available to assist with digitization. The toolkit assists with tracking and metadata creation.

This freely distributed toolkit includes a local database application, a central tracking application, a Metadata Template, a Pre-Quality Control Processor, a Quality Control Application, and an FTP client for submission to UFDC.

The toolkit was written in C# for use on PCs with Windows 2000, NT, or XP. Stay tuned for release information.
