- Pages from the President's Reading Initiative book
posted on Library West construction fence --
The George A. Smathers Libraries have found a good use for the construction fence surrounding Library West. The green fence facing the Plaza of the Americas features enlarged, vinyl-encased pages of President Machen's Faculty Reading Initiative book, "Why are all the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria? And Other Conversations About Race," by Beverly Daniel Tatum.
The President is encouraging faculty members to read the book and participate in a round-table discussion on September 9 as a part of his inauguration. The public pages on the fence allow the book to be available to all faculty, students and staff who wish to read the book but may not have access to a copy.
Reading copies of the book are also on reserve at all UF Library locations.

Online Anti-Plagiarism Service Now Available to UF --
The University of Florida has licensed Turnitin.com, a leading
plagiarism prevention service, for use by University of
Florida faculty and students. This service harnesses the
technology of databases and software "robots" to identify
matching text between submitted documents and literally
millions of documents posted on the Web and stored in
databases.
This tool will help ensure that honest students are not placed at a disadvantage when competing with a small number of dishonest peers. In addition it will act as a deterrent to plagiarism as well as a tool that will save faculty many hours of work when suspected plagiarism occurs.
For more information on Turnitin.com, go to http://at.ufl.edu/turnitin. (3/6/2003)
- Remote Access to Library-Licensed Databases/E-Journals Becomes Easier! --
A new library proxy for enabling remote access to library-licensed databases/e-journals is now available. Users can connect
by simply selecting "Remote Access" on the UF Libraries' Home Page; they will then be directed to a Web Page that allows them
to enter either either their 14-digit library number or GatorLink userid/password. No Web browser configuration is required.
In addition to providing an easier way to log on, this new proxy should also allow many people to now connect who have previously been unsuccessful trying to use the current proxy because of technical barriers.
This new service is being called the "Primary Library Proxy" to differentiate it from the original proxy (which remains available and will now be referred to as the "Secondary Library Proxy"). If users have been connecting successfully, there is no need for them to change anything.
You may wish to review all of the options users have for connecting from off-campus. When you select "Remote Access" from UF Libraries' Home Page you will see in the "Guide for Remote Access..." that current students, staff, and faculty can choose to access library-licensed resources by using either their free GatorLink dialup account (with automatic access to library databases), or by subscribing to any other Internet Service Provider (and then using one of the following choices to access library-licensed databases):
- Primary Library Proxy
- Secondary Library Proxy
- UF VPN (Virtual Private Network)
- Special library number access only to WebLUIS Indexes, Course Reserve, FirstSearch, and Eureka.
- E-Journal Locator Improves! -- Locating one of the 20,000+
journals available electronically through UF Libraries' subscriptions has just become much easier through
implementation of a new search engine and complete revision of the E-Journal Locator Web page. Many journals will now
be able to be located by simply entering a few letters from the first word of the journal title. Searching by any keyword(s)
in the title will sometimes be the best approach (and truncation of keywords using the * is now possible). Response time
is excellent, and most additions to the database are now included overnight (instead of only once every two months). Many
will also find the format of the information to be much more easily readable.

- Access to E-Journals Improves! -- We have recently arranged to have a company (Serials Solutions, Inc.) help us improve access to the E-Journal article full text content the UF Libraries have licensed; an E-Journals A-Z List is now available. Please read the details about this service; it's important to understand both the advantages and limitations of this service.
Among the advantages of this new service are:
-
It provides a much more comprehensive list of the journals having full text access than we've ever had before. In particular, this list integrates lists of the journals with full text in the article database services (e.g. EBSCOhost Academic Search Elite, Lexis-Nexis, etc) with the journal titles from publishers (e.g. Science Direct Elsevier) we've already been linking to directly in the UF Libraries' Catalog.
- Dates of full-text availability are included for most listed journals. This detailed information has not normally been available in the UF Libraries Catalog records for E-Journals.
- When more than one service includes full text content for a title, this will be shown. You can see where titles are duplicated, where years of coverage from services overlap, etc.
The list will be updated every two months. Again, Please read the details about this service. (1/9/2002)

- Distance Learning Reference & Referral Center to be Closed -- A lack of funding will cause this statewide service to be closed permanently after December, 2001. Hours of service availability will also be reduced before then. The UF Libraries will continue to support Distance Learners with services provided locally. Distance Learning Services | Help (10/2/01)
- Delivering the Libraries to Your Desktop -- The content of this new library brochure is also available on the Web. This version may be updated with additional information before the printed version is revised. Permanently located on the Library Services page. (8/29/01)
- Ordering Full text - Document Delivery -- Some articles may be ordered for fast delivery for a fee using your credit card from services such as Ingenta. This new Web page lists some of the many available services. (8/29/01)
- Returning Books Now Easier! -- It is now possible for items charged out from any of the following UF Libraries to be returned (or renewed) in any of the other listed libraries. This service has previously existed, but without including the Health Science Center Library. (6/10/01)
- Architecture and Fine Arts Library
- Education Library
- Health Science Center Library
- Journalism Library
- Legal Information Center

- WebLUIS Recall/Hold Form -- Most current UF students, faculty, and staff may now request checked-out items directly from WebLUIS when displaying the book's record in the UF Libraries' Catalog. While you are searching there, simply display the item's record and click on "Recall/Hold Request" link shown under the due date to display the form. The book details (title, etc.) and your patron information will be included in the request automatically. A copy of the request form will also be sent to the email address you enter on the form. More details. (5/28/01)
- Letter to UF Faculty (From Dale Canelas, Director of Libraries) -- Nicholson Baker's recent publication of Double Fold: Libraries and the Assault on Paper, has received a lot of attention. The book was the subject of the cover story of the 15 April issue of the New York Times Book Review and many subsequent reviews (the New York Review of Books, the Washington Post, etc.). The book is critical of libraries for the practice of reformatting print publications, especially newspapers, to microfilm. The University of Florida Library, along with many other research libraries engaged in active Preservation programs, is mentioned in Mr. Baker's book. This letter is the response to Mr. Baker's publication from Dale Canelas, Director of Libraries. (5/16/01)
- Search for UF Libraries' Videos -- You may search the UF Libraries' Catalog for videos only in the Library West collection (housed at the Circulation/Reserve Desk), or anywhere in the UF Libraries. When Using Internet Explorer, you may also display an alphabetic list of many (but not all) of the videos housed in Library West.(3/16/01)
- Education Governance Reorganization Transition Task Force Web Site -- Read the details of the proposed changes to the State of Florida's education system. (2/26/01)
- Ask UF - UF has now established a "Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)" service which includes many questions commonly asked of units throughout UF by prospective or current students, etc. Anyone connecting may browse the full UF list of FAQ's (the most frequently asked questions always appear at the top of the list), select a single category from a drop-down menu (e.g. "Libraries") to browse, or search the database for an answer to a question by keying in one or more words. If an answer is not found through browsing or searching, an individual may then send an inquiry on a form which will be answered by the appropriate UF unit. These inquiries may then also become FAQ's themselves if appropriate. UF Libraries' FAQ's currently in the "Ask UF" Service (1/19/01)

- SFX@UF Links Now in Google Scholar
:: Google Scholar™ uses the popular Google search engine to enable searches for scholarly materials such as peer-reviewed papers, theses/dissertations, books, preprints, abstracts and technical reports from broad areas of research. It includes a variety of academic publishers, professional societies, preprint repositories and universities, as well as scholarly articles available across the web. Some Google Scholar search results include links to full-text; some offer only citations.Since many of the scholarly materials available in library-licensed databases, E-Journals, etc. are now included in Google Scholar™ search results, the UF Libraries have partnered with Google so that SFX@UF links now appear adjacent to those results list entries.
As is the case with SFX links in library-licensed databases, these links in Google Scholar™ route users to the UF Libraries' SFX service menu, which enables checking to see if access to full text has been licensed by the UF Libraries (and connecting to it if it does), or checking if the content may be available within a UF library.
When a user is connected from a UF computer, or from off campus connected through UF using the UF VPN or the Library Proxy, many Google Scholar™ results allow linking directly to a library-licensed article, etc. without going through the SFX@UF menu. However, linking to many other articles will only be possible through this SFX@UF option. And the SFX Menu entry allowing for a check of the Library Catalog provides enhanced access not otherwise available in most cases.
To find this UF Libraries@Google Scholar™ page from the UF Libraries' Home Page (or most other Smathers Libraries Web Site pages), select either "Databases" or "Search" in the orange bar near the top, and then select "Internet Search Engines" in the upper left corner RELATED LINKS area.

- Enhancements to Web of Knowledge -- As of October 30, 2005, enhancements to ISI Web of Knowledge should make it easier to search, sort, and analyze the research literature.
Enhancements will provide researchers with more data, more control and more time:
- Export, print, save and e-mail records directly from the full record and the summary results page. No extra steps are necessary.
- Use the expanded display of cited references to view full titles and source data, making cited reference searching easier. You can see the full cited reference information, source and full title right on the cited reference page, when available.
- Search and sort records by publication year - finding specific records more quickly and intuitively.
Changes to ISI Web of Knowledge CrossSearch will improve the efficiency of the platform as a resource for your researchers:
- Enhanced CrossSearch results now mirror the format of results from individual products on the ISI Web of Knowledge platform. The results summary page will include OpenURL links as well as navigation buttons at the top of the page to: Home, Help, Search Page, Search History, and Marked List.
- CrossSearch will now include value-added External Collections by default. Your search is broadened to include all the External Collections on ISI Web of Knowledge. This automatically widens the scope of each search, providing many more search results without any additional effort.
- Ability to save searches in CrossSearch eliminates the need to re-enter queries for repeated searches over time. Your researchers can set up and save search queries, and get results from saved searches without having to re-enter the search queries.

On every UF Library Catalog screen you will now see a link to ONLINE RESOURCES in the line near the top that includes the links to FULL CATALOG, JOURNALS/SERIALS, etc. This link to the ONLINE RESOURCES sub-catalog has previously only been available by first clicking CHANGE DATABASES on that same line.
One of the main values of searching in this ONLINE RESOURCES sub-catalog is that results will NOT include the records in the FULL CATALOG that only go to table of contents, publisher sites, or contributor information. These approximately 15,000 records are still retrieved in FULL CATALOG searches. While these links to supplementary information have value, thay have also resulted in some frustration and confusion when full content was the expected result.
With the completed addition of the 38,000+ records for all our E-Journal collection a month ago, this ONLINE RESOURCES sub-catalog now represents a vast majority of our electronic collection. We have increased the number of these full content links since March 29, 2004 from 154,058 to 389,176.
However, it is important to note that the library catalog does not yet include all electronic resources. For example, there are over 23,000 important links in the PALMM Collection (Digital Library) which formerly were able to appear as search results in the old WebLUIS UF Catalog (without actually having records "in" the UF Catalog database); these have not yet been able to be included in the new (as of May 2004) UF Catalog. There are also some additional Government Documents records for materials received since we migrated to Aleph that have not yet been able to be added to the UF Catalog.
So if you ever wish to limit your searching only to catalog records that have links to full content, you are now able to click this new link to enter that special searching environment. Then when you wish to return to search the entire catalog for both full text and all other available formats, click FULL CATALOG.

Enclose your phrase in double quotation marks " " to find multiple words that are directly adjacent to one another in a specified order. Phrase searching will assist in locating desired results in Keyword, Title Word, Subject Word, and Abstract Word where applicable. For example: Keyword "water quality"
- Direct export to bibliographic software -- Eureka also offers direct export into the most popular bibliographic management software: RefWorks, EndNote, ProCite, and Reference Manager. Select which bibliographic software you are using from the Preferences link. From that point forth, simply click Export to bibliographic software to export your citations.

- 38,000+ E-Journal Records Have Been Added to the UF Libraries' Catalog!! -- While the UF Libraries' Catalog has previously included records with links to approximately 10,000 E-Journal titles from many major publisher packages like Elsevier, Wiley, Springer, etc., links to another 28,000+ E-Journals with at least some full text have also been available to UF users through the separate E-Journal Locator. With records for each of these E-Journals included in the library catalog, it will no longer be necessary to go to the separate E-Journal Locator to see if the UF Libraries have a journal available electronically. You can now search one place -- the Library Catalog -- for all journals. The library catalog now represents much more of our total collection of materials and resources.
Some key points include:
- Popular titles like Newsweek and Time will now have records with links to full text in the library catalog. Other scholarly journal titles only available electronically at UF through services like Academic Search Premier will now have links in the catalog as well. NOTE: It has not been feasible for library staff to manually maintain links to the thousands of titles in very dynamic article databases.
- Including these records means that there will now be separate records in the catalog representing the print and electronic versions of a journal (i.e. where the UF Libraries have subscribed to the print version of a title).
- The indicator [Electronic Resource] will appear adjacent to the journal's title in each of these new records.
- NOTE: When doing a "Browse" search, you should always see "(Online)" adjacent to the title entry on the Browse results list.
- Links in these new records will also first go to the E-Journal Locator record for that journal (as if you had manually entered a search in the E-Journal Locator); there you will see the full text options.
- The years of electronic subscription coverage previously only available in the E-Journal Locator will now also be available when following catalog links. NOTE: It has not been feasible for library staff to manually maintain this level of detail in the catalog up until now.
A project is now underway to remove the now-duplicative links from pre-existing print records -- as well as to suppress records that have been created locally in recent years for journals available at UF only electronically. There are approximately 10,000 of these links/records to be processed, so this will take some time to complete.

- In the First Person: Index to Letters, Diaries, Oral Histories, and Other Personal Narratives --
In the First Person is a new library index that lets users perform in-depth field and keyword searches across all letters, diaries, oral histories, memoirs, and autobiographies within scholarly materials that are freely available on the Web and Alexander Street databases. With a single search, users can access thousands of personal narratives in English from archives and repositories everywhere. The search returns citation information and links to full text, audio, and video whenever available.
Every imaginable topic, historical event, and person is covered, from World War I and II to popular culture, music to medicine, Hitler to John Wayne, gay rights to September 11th. It's the most comprehensive archive of social memory yet created-a one-stop starting point for historians, sociologists, genealogists, linguists, and psychologists who want to find, explore, and analyze human experiences. And it will be updated quarterly.
The first release of In the First Person indexes more than 2,500 collections of oral history from around the world. With upcoming releases, the index will broaden to cover other formats (letters, diaries, autobiographies, and so forth) and the proprietary content in the Alexander Street collections. By the end of 2005, the index will point to 350,000 pages of full text and 3,500 collections-more than a million pages of editorially selected materials spanning 400 years. (If you own or subscribe to any Alexander Street databases that contain first-person content indexed by In the First Person, the citations will link to the full text with one click.)

- Preview the New JSTOR Citation Search Feature -- JSTOR is implementing a simpler option for performing searches for authors and article titles. The Citation Search is intended to provide a quick and straightforward means of entering bibliographic data to conduct a search for known articles. Users may enter any combination of bibliographic data to try to locate an article. The search engine will first look for an exact match to the data entered into the form. If no exact match is found, the search engine will automatically identify the closest matches and will present them to the user.
The Citation Search Preview period will last for one month. During this time, comments may be sent via a special feedback form that is linked to the Citation Search page. Work on the final version will begin after this one-month preview; however, the Citation Search (preview version) will remain available during the entire development period.

- Birds of North America Online -- In two centuries of American ornithology, The Birds of North America (BNA) is only the fourth comprehensive reference covering the life histories of North American birds. Following in the footsteps of Wilson, Audubon, and Bent, BNA makes a quantum leap in information beyond what these historic figures were able to provide. Edited by Drs. Alan Poole and Frank Gill, this series provides detailed scientific information (18 volumes, 18,000 pages in total) for each of the 716 species of birds nesting in the USA and Canada. The print version of BNA was completed in 2002, a joint 10 year project of the American Ornithologists' Union, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, and the Academy of Natural Sciences.
Now as an online project of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, BNA is poised to become a living resource. Account contents will be updated frequently, with online-coordinated contributions from researchers, citizen scientists, and designated reviewers and editors. In addition, BNA Online will build image and video galleries showing behaviors, habitat, nests, eggs and nestlings, and more. And each online species account will contain recordings of that bird's songs and calls, selected from the extensive collection in Cornell's Macaulay Library of Natural Sounds. More...

The Making of Modern Law also includes advanced page navigation options - allowing users to search by entering a page number, a printed page number or by using a list on the side of the screen to navigate between pages with matches for the search term. Not only does this unique collection provide the resources necessary to trace the evolution of historical and contemporary legal study in the U.S. and Britain during these periods of monumental changes, but it also supports and complements the traditional study of law by featuring valuable literature from the most influential writers and key legal thinkers of the time. Some of the works include casebooks, local practice manuals, form books, works for lay readers, pamphlets, letters, speeches and more. The collection is of interest to scholars and researchers interested in domestic and international law, legal history, business and economics, politics and government, national defense, criminology, religion, education, labor and social welfare, and military justice.
