Tips for Effective Use of Library Frames
Alert! Some library database services may automatically close any frames when connecting. If you are working from a non-library workstation, be sure to bookmark the UF Libraries Home Page at https://www.uflib.ufl.edu so that you can easily return and start over. Your web browser may also have other means for quickly selecting a previously displayed page. For example, when using Netscape, selecting the "Go" menu may show a previous link to the UF Libraries web site. Selecting that may restore the library frames.
Hide the Left Frame When Not Needed
After using the left frame to locate a database or other web page, you may fully open the right frame to search in the database, etc. by clicking on the border between the frames and dragging it all the way to the left. When you want to change databases, etc., drag the border to open the left frame so the navigation tools are visible again.
Use Caution When Printing! When printing a web page, always be sure to click your mouse in the frame you want printed before starting to print.
UF Catalog Window
Opens up the UF Catalog in a smaller window for quick checks.

When using a non-WebLUIS database, use this button to quickly check whether a cited journal, etc. is in the UF Libraries' Collection. You can easily select and copy the text of the title of a journal from your database window and paste it into the UF Catalog search box. NOTE: When in WebLUIS, you can simply click "At Your Library?"

  • Hint! -- This new window neither fills the screen nor displays browser back buttons, etc. If you want a fully-functioning browser window, you may open it from your browser's "FILE" menu. NOTE: In the PC environment you may also just click Ctrl+N.

  • You can have only one new UF Catalog Window opened by this button at a time. -- If you click the button and the window doesn't pop up, it means that one is already opened and can be re-displayed (e.g. from the computer task bar in the PC environment).
DISPLAYING A NEW DATABASE Open up the left frame and simply type the first 2-3 letters of the new database name (or use one of the other available links - e.g. Quick Links A-Z.) Results will appear in the right frame.

  • If you enter a 2-3 letter search and don't get the results you want, simply enter another search in the left frame search box.

  • If you want to browse available databases alphabetically (including alternate titles) or by subject, select Database Locator.

ALERT!     If you enter a search that isn't responding, WebLUIS (including the Database Locator) is unavailable. Use the Quick Links A-Z link instead. Many services will still be available from there.

When Using WebLUIS

This concept applies to other database services (e.g. FirstSearch) as well. If you are using more than one database in a service concurrently, it's best to use the service's navigation method to change databases instead of the Database Locator search box. That will prevent having to establish a new connection to the service, loss of previous searches that may be re-used (if available), etc.
If you want to save your previous search history for efficiently re-doing the same searches in another WebLUIS search system database (UF Catalog, Academic Index...), you must select the "Change Databases" command on the WebLUIS toolbar. If you navigate to the new database using the Database Locator search box in the left frame you will be opening a new session and will lose your previous searches. Caution! You will also lose any marked records. It's always a good idea to e-mail or print/save your marked records before changing WebLUIS databases.

When selecting "Change Databases", you are taken to the WebLUIS Home Page to make your next database selection. You may:

  • Select another SUS Library Catalog link.
  • Select WebLUIS Indexes link to display a list of all the citation databases using the WebLUIS search system where searches may be re-used.

  • Once linking to the new WebLUIS database, you may select the Last Search or History commands to efficiently enter previous searches without re-typing.
REQUEST FORMS Selecting any of the forms will open a new browser window. When filling out an Interlibrary Loan request, Item Needed Request, etc., this will allow you to easily copy information from your research window into fields on the form by "toggling" between open windows. When finished sending the form, you may either close the window immediately or leave it open for submitting additional forms. Alert! If you decide to leave the new window open, the link to that form in the left frame will no longer work. Instead, you will need to locate the window that is already opened to that form (on your workstation task bar, etc.).

NOTE: How to place an Interlibrary Loan Request most efficiently -- When you are using a WebLUIS article index or library catalog (other than the UF Catalog), you will not need to re-type either your name or the citation information. After making sure that the item is not in the UF Libraries' Collection by selecting the "At Your Library?" command, simply select ILL Request with the record displayed and verify your address, etc. and fill out the remaining form fields.
