Title:  [Lake City Site]

Date:  ca. 1980

Reported by:  John Thomas

Duration:  00:01:28

File name: NPA2104

Dr. Jerald Milanich is working on an archaeology site in Lake City.  A resident of Lake City discovered a six to ten foot high Indian mound.  The mound was found to be the site of an actual indian village.  Data gathered from the site will be analyzed and could be applied to findings at other sites.

Segment 5

Title:  [Moire Patterns]

Date:  ca. 1980

Reported by:  John Thomas

Duration:  00:01:03

File name: NPA2105

A moiré pattern (which is a wave-like design) is created by moving thousands of sets of wires back and forth between a set of lights, a camera, and a subject.  This technique is assisting surgeons in reconstructing facial deformities in people.  Mike Madden from engineering and Dr. Mark Carlin from the college of medicine are both working on this project.

Segment 6

Title:  [Earthquake Station]

Date:  ca. 1980

Reported by:  John Thomas

Duration:  00:01:03

File name: NPA2106

An earthquake lab is opened on the UF campus.  A seismometer and a seismograph are both used to record any earth tremors.  Geology professor Dr. Douglas Smith is the director of the project.  Data collected will be sent to the data network of the United States Interior Department’s Earthquake Information Center in Colorado.

Segment 7

Title:  [Mediterranean Fruit Fly]

Date:  ca. 1980

Reported by:  John Thomas

Duration:  00:01:53

File name: NPA2107

Forty years ago fruit flies entered the U.S. undetected, and they have been responsible for destroying millions of dollars of citrus and mangoes.  To control the pests a biological control (parasitic larva) was used.  Dr. Pauline Lawrence, zoology professor, is doing research to try to find a synthetic chemical which would regulate the growth of insects (specifically the Caribbean fruit fly) and which could be used without interfering with the use of biological controls already in place.

Segment 8

Title:  [Solar Energy in Public Schools]

Date:  ca. 1980

Reported by:  John Thomas

Duration:  00:01:36

File name: NPA2108

A year long study has been conducted by engineers at the University of Florida in the Solar Energy Lab in an attempt to see if alternative energy sources (as solar energy) could be used in public schools as a way to save money on heating and hot water expenditures.

Segment 9

Title:  [Jupiter Research]

Date:  ca. 1980

Reported by:  John Thomas

Duration:  00:01:56

File name: NPA2109

An eight acre antenna field at the University of Florida has been monitoring radio waves from the planet Jupiter.  Dr. George, a graduate student, has developed a device which will be attached to the back of the telescope at Rosemary Hill Observatory for six months.  The data will determine if there is any relation between the radio emissions and the optical emissions from Jupiter.

Segment 10

Title:  [Hearing Test for Infants]

Date:  ca. 1980

Reported by:  John Thomas

Duration:  00:01:48

File name: NPA2110

Dr. Donald Teas is the principal investigator in a study to discover if there is a method by which the hearing of infants can be detected.  Keith and Kathy Berg are also helping with the research.

Segment 11

Title:  [Big Cypress Swamp]

Date:  ca. 1980

Reported by:  John Thomas
