An early predecessor of the College of Business Administration was the Department of Business Administration, which existed 1923-1925 and became the School of Business Administration and Journalism in the College of Arts and Sciences in May 1926. Walter J. Matherly was the first director of the School. When first established, the School consisted of three departments: business administration, economics and sociology, and journalism. A College of Commerce and Journalism was established in late 1926, and that year is recognized as the founding date for a college of business at the University of Florida. In 1933, the College was renamed the College of Business Administration, with Matherly as its first dean. In 1996, the college was renamed in honor of donor Alfred C. Warrington.
