U.D. Hendrickson

Uriah D. Hendrikson and Etta Almira Moore; source: Pioneer Life, Palm Beach County History OnlineThe Expedition record mistakenly refers to U.D. Hendrickson as "U.G. Hendrickson." U.D. (Uriah Dunning) Hendrickson was born in Ohio and it is unknown when he moved to Florida. He was an early settler in the Lake Worth region. It's possible he was living in Eau Gallie or Melbourne as early around 1878. In 1879 he built a sharpie, the Illinois, as a transport ship and soon made regular trips between Lake Worth and Titusville. Around 1882 he partnered with brothers E.M. and J.H. Brelsford to operate a store and small hotel on the east shore of the lake. They also began sailing the schooner, the "Emily B.", to transport freight. The partnership did not last long, and soon Hendrickson opened his own store at the north side of the lake. He began sailing the schooner, the "Mary B.", transporting supplies and mail between Jupiter and various points around Lake Worth. By the end of the 1880s he built and began operating a small steamship, the "Lake Worth", which was the first steamer on Lake Worth. By 1890, he was Manager and Captain of the Steamer "Lake Worth", carrying passengers and mail for the Lake Worth and Jacksonville Transportation Company. He also sailed the schooners, "Mary B." and "Emily B." between Lake Worth and Jacksonville, carrying freight. He also opened a second store on the west side of Lake Worth. Around 1921, he moved his family to Umatilla.
