Steamers

The Expedition party occasionally noted other steamships during their journey, and the authors of the Expedition texts commented on the transport of freight and passengers via steamers. For much of the 1800s and into the early 1900s steamboats were used to navigate the rivers and lakes of Florida, and also to travel to coastal ports such as Key West, Port Tampa and cities around the Gulf of Mexico. Travel by steamboat was replaced by travel by rail in the 20th Century.
