Jerry L. Weinberg, research scientist, is heading a team at the Space Astronomy Lab at UF to study the pollutants, which were discovered after the lift off of the space shuttle Columbia.  Besides the pollutants of dust, gas, paint, and assorted earth particles they also discovered light pollution (resulting from the thrusters going off) which could effect observations of space and the earth.

With a grant from the Bradenton based Retirement Corporation of America Gary Roberts, a graduate student in architecture with an emphasis on gerontology, is working on designing a community for the elderly.  He was concerned that the elderly are often isolated and that this can lead to deterioration in their mental and physical health.  His design takes these factors into effect and attempts to remedy them.

The University of Florida received one million dollars in computer equipment from the Harris Corporation, IBM, and Gould SEL.  Tax break incentives helped to encourage the gifts.  The gifts will assist in the ever increasing demand for computers by students at UF.

Sheree Adams and Laura McCall conceived of the idea of creating a parcourse for disabled people.  Ruth Alexander designed fifteen stations for the parcourse.  Doug Jones, a UF graduate student, who is confined to a wheel chair is shown using several of the stations.

Materials Science professors, David E. Clark and Larry L. Hench have developed a materials called “sol gel” which is a purer form of glass which can be produced with much less heat.  It might have applications for fiber optics and the storage of nuclear or chemical wastes.

A diary found in an attic assisted in the discovery of a site in Citrus County near the Withlacoochee River.  Dr.Jerald T.  Milanich and his students are unearthing artifacts at the site.  According to the diary the site may have been a war camp of Osceola.

A report about coastal engineers, who are placing computers undersea.  Data is collected and then transferred to the computers in the Coastal Engineering Lab, where it is analyzed by the University of Florida, the navy, etc.  The data will aid in predicting storm surges and hurricanes.
