Okaloacoochee Slough

Large Sabal palmetto hammock, Okaloacoochee Slough; source: State Archives of Florida, Florida MemoryThe Okaloacoochee Slough is a region of wetlands that is located approximately 30 miles east of Fort Myers, just to the north of the Big Cypress. The surrounding forest was heavily logged in the early 1900s to make railroad crossties. Today, the slough and forest are protected as the Okaloacoochee Slough State Forest. The Expedition party crossed the Okaloacoochee Slough using an old government causeway that had been "... constructed about 1835." This is probably a reference to a causeway constructed in 1855 by the U.S. Army.
